Dictionary of Applied Math for Engineers and Scientists

PREFACE
To describe the scope of this work, I must go back to when Stan Gibilisco, editorial advisor of the dictionary series, asked me to be in charge of this volume. I appreciated the idea of a compendium of mathematical terms used in the sciences and engineering for two reasons. Firstly, mathematical definitions are not easily located; when I need insight on a technical term, I turn to the analytic index of a monograph that seems related; recently I was at a loss when trying to find “Vi`ete’s formulas *,” a term used by an Eastern-European student in his homework. I finally located it in the Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Mathematics, and that brought home the value of a collection of esoteric terms, put together by many people acquainted with different sectors of the literature. Secondly, at this time we do not yet have a tradition of cross-disciplinary terms; in fact, much interaction between mathematics and other scientific areas is in the making, and times (and timing) could not be more exciting.

Math Refresher for Scientists and Engineers

PREFACE
Math Refresher for Scientists and Engineers, Third Edition is intended for people with technical backgrounds who would like to refresh their math skills. This book is unique because it contains in one source an overview of the essential elements of a wide range of mathematical topics that are normally found in separate texts. The first edition began with relatively simple concepts in college algebra and trigonometry and then proceeded to more advanced concepts ranging from calculus to linear algebra (including matrices) and differential equations. Numerical methods were interspersed throughout the presentation. The second edition added chapters that discussed probability and statistics. In this third edition, three new chapters with exercises and solutions have been added.

Real-Life Math: Everyday Use of Mathematical Concepts

Info:
"What does this have to do with real life?" is a question that plagues mathematics teachers across America, as students are confronted with abstract topics in their high school mathematics courses. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics emphasizes the importance of making real world connections in teaching mathematics so that learning new content is meaningful to students. And in meeting NCTM national standards, this invaluable book provides many insights into the many connections between mathematics applications and the real world. Nearly 50 math concepts are presented with multiple examples of how each is applied in everyday environments, such as the workplace, nature, science, sports, and even parking. From logarithms to matrices to complex numbers, concepts are discussed for a variety of mathematics courses, including:...

Geometry Demystified

This book is for people who want to get acquainted with the concepts of basic geometry without taking a formal course. It can serve as a supplemental text in a classroom, tutored, or home-schooling environment. It should also be useful for career changers who need to refresh their knowledge of the subject. I recommend that you start at the beginning of this book and go straight through.
This is not a rigorous course in theoretical geometry. Such a course defines postulates (or axioms) and provides deductive proofs of statements called theorems by applying mathematical logic. Proofs are generally omitted in this book for the sake of simplicity and clarity. Emphasis here is on practical aspects. You should have knowledge of middle-school algebra before you begin this book.

The Theory of Finite Groups
Yazar: cemil98 | 25 Haziran 2008 | Okundu: 152 | Yorumlar: 0 | Mathematics Books

The Theory of Finite Groups

Since its early beginnings in the nineteenth century the theory of finite groups has grown to be an extensive and diverse part of algebra. In the beginning of the 1980s, this development culminated in the classification of the finite simple groups, an impressive and convincing demonstration of the strength of its methods and results.
In our book we want to introduce the reader as far as an introduction can do this to some of the developments in this area that contributed to this success or may open new perspectives for the future.

History of Math

Information:
In the following pages, I have tried to give a reasonably full account of how mathematics has developed over the past 5000 years. Because mathematics is one of the oldest intellectual instruments, it has a long story, interwoven with striking personalities and outstanding achievements. This narrative is basically chronological, beginning with the origin ofmathematics in the great civilizations of antiquity and progressing through the later decades of the twentieth century. The presentation necessarily becomes less complete for modern times, when the pace of discovery has been rapid and the subject matter more technical.
